AQL sampling plan for lot size 281 to 500

For a lot of 281 to 500 units at general inspection level II the code letter is H and the sample size is 50. At AQL 2.5 accept the lot with 3 or fewer nonconforming units, reject it with 4 or more.

Level II is the default. Level I gives smaller samples and less protection, level III larger samples. The special levels S-1 to S-4 are for destructive or expensive tests. At level II the sample is 10 % to 18 % of the lot.

n = sample size, Ac = accept with this many or fewer nonconforming units, Re = reject with this many or more. Where the standard table shows an arrow, the plan of the letter in brackets is used, with its sample size. LQ (limiting quality) is the defect level that this plan still accepts in 10 % of lots. AOQL is the worst average outgoing quality when rejected lots are sorted 100 %. Risks use the binomial model.

What this means: with AQL 2.5 a lot that is exactly 2.5 % defective passes 96 % of the time. A lot that is 12.9 % defective still passes one time in ten. The plan separates good and bad lots only roughly: lots several times worse than the AQL can still pass.

Each curve shows how likely a lot is to be accepted at a given incoming defect level. The steeper the curve, the better the plan separates good lots from bad ones. Read more in the AQL guide.

Frequently asked questions

What sample size do I need for a lot of 281 to 500 units?

With general inspection level II the code letter is H and the sample size is 50 units (level I: F, 20 units; level III: J, 80 units). For some AQL values the table arrows move you to a different sample size, so always read n together with Ac and Re in the table for your AQL.

How many defects are allowed in a lot of 281 to 500 units at AQL 1.0, 2.5 and 4.0?

At level II, normal inspection: AQL 1.0: inspect 50, accept with 1, reject with 2; AQL 2.5: inspect 50, accept with 3, reject with 4; AQL 4.0: inspect 50, accept with 5, reject with 6.

Does every lot of 281 to 500 units get the same plan?

Yes. ISO 2859-1 and ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 group lot sizes into ranges, and every lot in the range 281 to 500 gets the same code letter. A lot of 501 moves to the next range and a larger sample. Only where the sample would be larger than the lot do you inspect the whole lot.
