How to read the result

The rating descriptions are shortened summaries of the AIAG-VDA tables; use the handbook for your formal ratings. The grid on the right shows how occurrence and detection change the priority for the chosen severity. The full FMEA worksheet applies the same table to every failure chain.

Frequently asked questions

›What replaced the RPN in the AIAG-VDA FMEA?

The action priority (AP) table from the 2019 AIAG-VDA FMEA handbook. It ranks risks as High, Medium or Low by looking at severity first, then occurrence, then detection, instead of multiplying them.

›Why is RPN not used any more?

Very different risks can have the same RPN, and a high severity can hide behind a low RPN. AP avoids this by weighting severity most.

›Must every High AP have an action?

The team must either define an action to improve prevention or detection, or justify and document why the current controls are adequate. Many customers expect actions for all High priorities.
