Supplier capability assessment vs procurement capability assessment
Short answer
The two names sound alike but look in opposite directions. A supplier capability assessment looks outward at one supplier and asks whether it can make your parts in the right quality, quantity and on time. A procurement capability assessment looks inward at your own purchasing function and asks how mature its processes, people, data and governance are.
Side by side
| Aspect | Supplier capability assessment | Procurement capability assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Can this supplier deliver what we need? | How well does our procurement function work? |
| Object | One supplier or one supplier site | Your own purchasing organisation |
| Typical areas | Quality system, development, process control, measurement, sub-suppliers, problem solving, logistics | Strategy, category management, sourcing process, contract and supplier management, people, systems, data |
| Done by | Supplier quality engineer, purchasing, often with a supplier self-assessment first | Procurement management, internal audit or consultants |
| Result | Score, class A / B / C, approved or not, action plan for the supplier | Maturity level per area and an improvement roadmap for the procurement team |
| Standards | ISO 9001 8.4, IATF 16949 8.4.1.2, customer requirements | No single standard; internal maturity models |
When you need a supplier capability assessment
Before you nominate a new supplier or a new site, when a supplier takes on a new technology or a big volume increase, and after serious quality problems. ISO 9001 clause 8.4 asks for criteria to evaluate and select external providers; IATF 16949 adds a documented supplier selection process with a risk assessment.
When you need a procurement capability assessment
When management wants to know how professional its own buying is: before a reorganisation, a new ERP or sourcing tool, or to benchmark procurement maturity. It does not tell you whether a given supplier is good.
How they fit together
A mature procurement function has a defined supplier selection process, and the supplier capability assessment is one of its main tools. In quality and automotive work, almost always the supplier capability assessment is meant.
