Sort

  • S1

Only items needed for the current work are in the area: no unused tools, parts, fixtures or old documents.

  • S2

Unneeded items are removed or red-tagged, with a defined place and owner for the red-tag area.

  • S3

Personal items, food and drinks are only in the places provided for them.

  • S4

Quantities of material, consumables and spare parts at the workplace are limited to what is needed.

  • S5

Defective, rework and obsolete parts are separated and clearly marked, not mixed with good parts.

Set in order

  • S6

Every tool, gauge, fixture and container has a fixed, marked place (shadow board, label, floor marking).

  • S7

Items used most often are within easy reach; heavy or rarely used items are stored further away.

  • S8

Aisles, emergency exits, fire equipment and electrical panels are marked and free.

  • S9

Min / max levels or reorder points are visible for material and consumables.

  • S10

Gauges and measuring instruments are stored protected, identified and show their calibration status.

  • S11

Material, work in progress and finished goods are identified and in marked locations.

Shine

  • S12

Floors, machines, workbenches and shelves are clean, without oil, chips, dust or leaks.

  • S13

Cleaning is part of the routine: a cleaning plan with responsibilities and the cleaning material is at hand.

  • S14

Cleaning is also inspection: leaks, loose parts and wear found during cleaning are reported and repaired.

  • S15

Sources of dirt (leaks, chips, dust) are identified and being eliminated, not only cleaned up.

  • S16

Lighting, signs, labels and visual displays are clean, readable and working.

Standardize

  • S17

The standards for the area are visible: reference photos, layout, colour code and 5S rules.

  • S18

Colour coding, labels and markings follow one site-wide standard.

  • S19

Responsibilities for 5S tasks (who, what, how often) are defined and displayed.

  • S20

Work instructions and checklists at the workplace are current, controlled and match the 5S standard.

  • S21

Visual management shows normal and abnormal conditions at a glance (e.g. fill level, min / max, status).

Sustain

  • S22

Daily or weekly 5S checks are done and recorded by the team, not only before audits.

  • S23

Previous audit findings are closed on time, with owner and due date.

  • S24

People in the area were trained in 5S and can explain the rules and their own tasks.

  • S25

5S results are displayed (score trend) and discussed in team meetings.

  • S26

Management takes part in 5S walks and recognises good areas; improvements from the team are visible.

5S-Audit Checkliste online
